Exit Mundi gives you some scenarios on our demise. Its a pretty decent website and some of the scenarios are frighteningly close to reality

It doesn't help that there is a certain caste of people (cough ... christians ... cough ...) that WANT the annihilation of earth to pass so that they can force the end times of their beliefs.
