An application of Semantic MediaWiki. Having to "consult first with Snerfling" in order to add your own semantic relations might seem to limit the appeal and scalability of this service across various domains of expertise. A clearer suggestions mechanism, or the ability to define synonyms between semantic terms, would be nice. Martinjdow, while it may sound a bit "limiting" to have User:Snerfling moderating new semantic tags on the wiki, it's really for benign reasons. For example, if the wiki already has established an Attribute label "Country Code" that is already utilized in over 11,000 pages on the wiki, it's to everyone's benefit that a new user NOT create a new attribute called "Nation Code" and start laboriously tagging new pages with that attribute, when they could/should take advantage of the existing Attribute. You make it sound almost like a sinister plan to limit the freedoms of Centiare users. It's not at all like that. We're not Wikipedia (the granddaddy of cabal-led restrictions on users). Hi, Happy to hear there are no sinister plans Thekohser! And I do wholeheartedly welcome the move to use RDF within the wiki environment. I understand (I think) well the practical problem from a technical, RDF, perspective, but I suspect that the solution to resolving terminology differences from a user's point of view lies neither in re-tagging, or in a currently opaque process for negotiating a new tag/concept/URI. Technical solutions aside, perhaps it would be possible to document on the wiki what the criteria are for using a different RDF vocabulary, adding terms, or even using one's own? What would be the process for engaging with Centiare? The trouble is, I think people like to "... It's all good, Martin. I realize exactly what you're saying, and I'm sure one day (maybe by 2012 or 2013) there will be simple tools that will allow machines or users to "merge" attributes, categories, and relations with thesaurus-like ease. But, until then, we're just plodding along with Centiare, hoping that people familiar enough with Wikipedia will feel the urge to create two pages on Centiare -- a biography of their self, and a directory listing of their employer (or home town, or favorite animal, or whatever). Once the database has about 100,000 pages, then we can write scripts that will append semantic tags to all of the "obvious" text strings (cities, states, religions, companies,... Many thanks for your response. one day (maybe by 2012 or 2013) there will be simple tools that willI would agree, but..we currently have a user community looking for a user interface consisting of a "semantic tag cloud".. as a means to reconcile category synonyms from a user perspective. I'm checking out whether this is feasible within a short-ish time frame. So right now I'm rather interested in approaches to at least a subset of the situation you outline (without delving too deep into ontology merging approaches etc). Good luck with Centiare, ..mjd |
