Reminds me of the age-old controversy about whether college is for enlightenment or for sharpening tools for corporate consumption. The internet makes sudy at institutions irrelevant. Soon universities will only teach you how to learn and then you will go off and study on your own. Your employment will be based on competancy measures rather than academic achievement. I completely agree with the title of the article. The courses offered at colleges *usually* have very little or nothing to do with day to day earning a living or promoting worthwhile information. I will restrain myself because I know we have several professors and intellectuals who frequent Clipmarks. They have to earn a living too. :~) The internet is a wonderful teacher on it's own! I learn more each day and you can find out anything just by typing one word! The world is full of "educated idiots". BTW, can we tap into some of those "windfall profits" these colleges and universities are making. I mean, tuition rates have gone up far more than gasoline prices. There's still something reassuring about an actual instructor being there and the discussions in the class between students. In an English class you can have your essays peer edited. There is the contact with other people who share the same interests, and the internet is not always right. Not a waste of time for the political propagandists who have taken the colleges over and now wash the brains of new crops of useful idiots year in - year out. |
