My German teacher told us that learning German in school no matter how well you do, will maybe allow you to understand the News, but if you want to learn German you have to go to the country and speak to the people. The way people speak in general conversation, no matter what the language, can be far removed from anything in the official version. There can be twists from town to town as there clearly are in English. Maybe not just opening your mind, but making it wider. Always remembering that when in another country, when having trouble dealing with a culture that is new, they have a right to laugh.
