Zaten aşırı gerçekçi bir yaklaşım, insanlara aradığı mutluluğu verememişti. Üstelik Fransa’da 1870 askeri bozgunundan sonra, halkta karamsarlık, bezginlik, siyasal ve toplumsal alanda bazı değişiklikler yapılmasını gerekli kılıyordu. Ruhsal bunalım içindeki genç kuşak, eskiyi yıkmak, geleneğin dışında bir yol tutmak eğiliminde idi. Bu sırada Alman filozof Schopenhauer’in ileriye sürdüğü “Dünya bir tasavvurdan ibarettir.” görüşü gençler tarafından benimseniyordu. Artık görünene değil, bilinç altına, öznelliğe yönelindi.
