We all should have the need to learn, we all should need to enjoy fantasy. We all need to be able to think. We can do these things better if we are not encumbered by ancient beliefs, developed to explain the inexplicable or non existent. Those who are not able to take on the needs may fill the void with .........whatever. This essay, to me, was mostly about labeling oneself or one's group. Allowing others to choose the label gives them the power to characterize your group/self. Homosexuals (of both genders), technophiliacs (geeks), religious groups, and political persuasions should, and sometimes do, choose their own label. By NOT choosing a label as advocated here, invites an externally chosen label. And becoming "invisible" makes being anything meaningless. It is not a coincidence that tribes usually name themselves a name which translates to The People. Every exclusive group is The [Group}; everyone else is Other. Unfortunately, this is the problem with politics in the US now: it's Us and Them. You are for Us or ag'in' Us. |
