Fracture says: Oh no! Advocating a semblance of personal responsibility over praying to a myth! How un-American! Starbucks had a quote against evolution one time. Maybe they are trying even things out? Just flexing their corporate muscles. What about the thousands of Atheistic messages shoved in our faces? If we create the catastrophes, wouldn't we learn not to do them over and over again? Obviously not. The power to overcome these problems certainly does not come within. Try curing many of cancer, healing thousands, answering prayers and thousands of other things by ourselves. You've got to be joking. Only by God these things are possible. What about the thousands of Atheistic messages shoved in our faces?List them please.. i bet you can't list many... for every atheist message you can list, we can list probably twice as many or more theist messages... As for doing things by ourselves: - curing many of cancer[s] - we do that every day in hospitals.. i tell you what.. let's do a test. you take 100 people with cancer & "faith heal" them.. we'll take 100 people with those same cancers and heal them using science and our evil athiestice methods.. let's see who come out on top? - healing thousands - again.. hospitals, doctors, etc... Look at vaccines.. for the most part they have prevented countless outbreaks..... ps: great quote from SEB's page on this: ... and God bless Ms. Incanno because, it’s always entertaining to watch a Christian go into hysteria when someone has a different viewpoint than their own. Having an atheistic point of view shoved in a Christians face is no better/no worse than having a Christians view shoved in an atheists face. The atheists cry just as much as the religious folks do so none of you are fooling anyone. Both sides need to STFU and learn to live in tolerance. With that said... Starbucks is inciting a religious war they won't be able to handle. The atheists cry just as much as the religious folks...I would disagree. Atheist are a vast minority, particularly in American society. They tolerate a lot of religious messages (and so they should). One should also not be surprised that a quote questioning religious beliefs might garner grater outcry. The far greater numbers of religious people greatly increase the probability of someone taking their offense to such ridiculous ends. Seeing as how Atheists are indeed a minority, yet a vast majority of the lawsuits are Atheists suing in order to strip every symbol of religion from the landscape, then it does seem they cry more (or at least louder). Seeing as how Atheists are indeed a minority, yet a vast majority ofBINGO! Johnny, tell our winner what they'll be taking home today! I think you both a running with popular sentiment but do not have any proof to back up your claim. The vast majority of law suits? I think you mean with regards to religion. Are all those that are suing with regards to religion atheists? I'd suggest that this is also not true. That a vast minority needs to sue in order to safeguard its rights also is not surprising. But to suggest that atheists are as squeaky a wheel as theists are, well that just doesn't make sense when you see what happens in the real world. Here is a test, go to a public event and speak of the non-existence of god, I dare you. I'd pay to see that "needs to sue".. that line right there says a lot. Nobody "needs" to sue anyone. This is the reason I believe the lawyer population needs to be controlled. However, that's a different rant. Your last line is benign of an intellectual value. Any place where you have people gathering with similar interests and beliefs and you speak out against such interests/beliefs will evoke similar reactions. Wanna try it yourself? Go to any Hells Angels meeting and speak of your disdain for motorcyclists. How about a Gay Pride parade and do the same? Come on... let's at least go for some realism in this. BBW: the difference is that the majority of people int the US are "religious" (i put it in quotes on purpose). So any time an atheist speak out or tries to make a point they are beaten down. And in many places one would be fearful of speaking such views... I'm not talking about (and i doubt kmcolo is either) going to a church and "preaching" atheism, I'm talking about a simple public venue in let's say... the bible belt... Your suggestions of a Hell's Angel's meeting are too narrow... Any football/baseball/etc game. Any University commencement. Any public event not specific to a religion or lack there of. First... let me say that anyone foolish enough to think that speaking out against the majority isn't going to get you verbally battered (even physically) in return, needs a reality check. Let's say I was all for allowing people to beat on their pets. Now.. I am sure there are some sick bastards out there who feel this way. Now let's say I go to a baseball game and profess my support for beating my dog into the ground. Can either of you guess what is going to happen? Even simpler... how about if I announce my support for allowing 10 year olds to buy beer? Cigarettes? At that point I would have both the atheists and theists stoning me. You cannot be in the minority and expect to say what... Let's say I was all for allowing people to beat on their pets.Yes but, the US & Canada both have: - Freedom of speech - Freedom of religion They, however don't have: - freedom to beat your pet So your point again is a bit off the mark. Legally, I should be able to stand up in a public area (and as long as I'm not being a public nuisance) be able to talk about Atheism & why I think it is the truth. Its exactly because of the fear of being persecuted for one's beliefs that freedom of expression laws exist. What your basically telling me is that in the US, this doesn't exist, because of mob rule? Ok point taken about the "freedom of speech" law but now you're getting into what laws are right and wrong. Why is alcohol legal and pot illegal? If I was a pot smoker and spoke of my support for it in a public area, it would not get me arrested (even though it's illegal) nor would I be likely to cause mass hysteria. Also, freedom of speech IS limited you realize? What do you think would happen if you preached your distaste for specific ethnic peoples? Why, you'd be arrested of course! That plays into "freedom of choice" because some will say your belief of religion is a choice. Regardless of whether anyone thinks it is right or wrong, mob rule is a fact. Come on, you know it just as well ... The point was that you said atheists cry just as much as the religious folks dobut the point that atheists are a vast minority and that it is dangerous to publicly speak in favor of atheism point out that this is not true. My point was... if you are prepared to preach your values (or lack of) you have to be prepared for the backlash.A'ight. That's true, but those who are giving their opinion (even if unwanted) still should be protected.. people can stand there and argue with them, etc.. but any physical violence should be stopped by the authorities.. I just question how quickly the authorities in some places would step in to protect.... kmcolo I still say that the atheists cry the loudest. It may be that they are doing it to be heard over the masses but that doesn't change my opinion. The fact that they use lawsuits to get heard makes it even worse for me. I hate frivolous lawsuits with a passion. TCW... you are absolutely right, there should bot be a fear of physical violence and that should indeed be handled by the proper authorities. HOWEVER, expecting no physical violence only exists in a dreamers world. Again I repeat.. anyone is allowed their opinion but it's up to the person to know when/where/how to present it. There should not be a fear of violence when considering within the question that the violence would be administered by a people who have dedicated themselves to a loving god which preaches that they show love to their brother. There should not be a fear of violence when considering within the question that the violence would be administered by a people who have dedicated themselves to a loving god which preaches that they show love to their brother.Indeed, there SHOULD be no fear of violence, but reality is a different story... I'll bet good money you are wrong and that indeed some of these god loving people would resort to violence. I'm not even sure it's a really atheist statement really. It is really the truth, there are plenty of people out there that call themselves christians or believers of one religion or another, yet you only hear them say something about "god" or whatever spiffy name they have for their diety when times are tough. For someone to find the statement offensive is just retarded...mostly because apparently the shoe did fit, and whomever is one of those people that only thinks about the "creator" when they need something. Who gives a shit- it's Starbucks! We have an asshole like Bush running the country using the Bible like it's a government handbook and more people are concerned about what Starbucks prints on it's goddamned cups (can an atheist say goddamned?). Anyway, I agree w/ laceym on this one; they pissed off a bunch of Evolutionists and now they're trying to appear neutral by quoting on both sides of the fence. |
