The first one is the one Rembrandt did late in his life, and it's arguably a much superior piece of art. In the early one, the image is violent and dynamic, in the later one, it's much quieter -- characterized by a sense of mourning and consolation.

A similar contrast exists in his two "Return of the Prodigal Son" works: the latter is quiet and wonderful. Good clip!
Interesting how we see differently as we age!

Also - I just finished posting a sermon I gave a few years back that uses one of the two, as well as one by Carvaggio. It's called Pagan Abraham, father of three religions.
