debbyski says: "The first is that it might actually relieve the strain on today’s soldiers and end the “backdoor draft” of volunteers who have already served while their civilian peers remain comfortably undisturbed. I am aware that Army leaders fear that a draft would hurt the professionalism of today’s force. However, the lowering of recruiting requirements, as well as the offering of big signing bonuses to impressionable high school students, is already diminishing standards. Either situation would accelerate movement toward a decisive point — a commitment to victory, or the realization that Americans simply do not believe the threats cited are really worthy of the sacrifices required to vanquish them." Not to mention the National Guard being put on standby so that some of the soldiers can go home for a well earned rest. Trouble is, I don't think many soldiers would be too impressed by this move (bringing in the weekend warriors to take their places). But a rest is a rest. Yet the fatcats keep buying them hummers and keep pumping those Bush tax cuts back to the Middle East oil countries. A draft would be an excellent motivation for today's youth to mobilize. Burning draft cards, campus protests -- the likes of which have not been seen since the 60's -- Bush does not want that! I am all for the draft. If the elites and chickenhawks suddenly stood faced with the very real possibility that they or their own children could be killed or mulitated in the war, then perhaps they will reconsider things a bit. This argument to bring back the draft really burns my butt...and is so narrow minded in scope. What we really need is a dismantling of the war machine--not more bloody fodder to feed it! Dammit, this argument has no vision, no insight into what is really the problem--that Amerrika is a war based economy and the profiteers would love nothing more than for us to get involved in a debate over the draft while they keep pushing their agenda thru congress and buying off Presidential candidates like Hillary Clinton... meanwhile we are being duped into thinking that "something" is being done to "change things"...That ugly beast just rolls along, the revolving door in Congress keeps funding the defen... |
