TheCatWhisperer says: I've been a proponent of this for a LONG time. I'm not talking about 100% fruit juices, I'm talking about "Cocktails" (drinks laden with high fructose corn syrup & other sugars placed in artificially sweetened drinks). Pop is a key target IMO, it is heavily laces with sugar. Though I think all pop (non-diet or otherwise) should be taxed. The money raised from these taxes should go towards subsidizing 100% pure juices & blends (which still must contain 100% real juice, just not of one variety). I also think tax should be places on all junk foods like chips, chocolates & candies, fast foods, and high-slat/fat processed foods. The money from those taxes should be used to subsidize the price of vegetables, pure dairy & meats (of the non-processed variety). Too many families eat crap because they can't afford good food. I remember this all to well growing up. We lived off kraft dinner, mr. noodles, "fish sticks" and other processed foods because real food was too expensive. PS: I love the last paragraph I clipped, this dick-head blaming video games. Gee I wonder what's worse consuming a cup with 600 colories in it, or playing a video game fro an hour? The simple fact is that a lot of parents feed thier kids sugary juices & pop because they are cheaper than real juice, milk & bottled water (lots of city water is awful). Kids love sweet drinks, so parents give them what they can afford. Video games, on the other hand are easier to remove or limit from a kid's daily life. I don't know many parents who let thier kids sit in front of the TV for hours on end. They do however feed them this sugary crap. I'm a software developer & avid video game player. I guar... The thing is, the sugar in most of these products is from corn. The government is subsidizing corn to keep it's price down. Why subsidize to keep the price down then tax to bring the price back up? Why not just stop or reduce the subsidizing of corn? This all just sounds like a round about way for the government to skim more tax dollars to me. In other words, it is nothing more than a scam. You said it, the US government is subsidizing corn.... Well, the local San Francisco government has nothing to do with that, they are trying to battle what they see as a problem by applying a tax to high-sugar drink. Makes sense to me. Besides, corn is use in more than sugar.. it is also used to make ethanol and used in food for people, feed for animals, etc. Hardly sounds like a scam to me. Too many families eat crap because they can't afford good food. This is not strictly true, for example for the price that is paid here for a decent frozen pizza i can but a whole stack of fresh fruit and veg, and they do not taste like the carton that they came in either. All governments have it within their power to do something about the obesity problem, but as with all things we just talk and talk and talk until the problem is out of control. If you wish processed food to be more healthy then you must set a figure on just how much salt, sugars, fats, (the bad ones) they may be able to contain before they are required to carry a government health warning. You may argue th... And another thing They are applying the tax to drinks made from corn syrup, not the corn itself. The end user isn't buying "corn" or its buy products directly in this case. the companies produsing the drinks are. the SF govt. is trying to recover costs from these companies. The products tehy produce are aimed at kids (and adults) they are KNOWN to be very unhealthy, which puts a burden on the populace, hospitals, etc. So why not try and recover the costs? This is not strictly true, for example for the price that is paid here for a decent frozen pizza i can but a whole stack of fresh fruit and veg, and they do not taste like the carton that they came in either.Must be nice... where (approx) do you live? However, a whole meal usually takes more than a buch of carrots or potatoes.. usually a meal comprises of vegetals & a meat or other protien. Now for the price (here) of the veggies alone, I can buy a pizza. Add meat to that (chicken, pork, etc). I can buy multiple frozen pizzas. Or a box of "chicken fingers" and fries that is enough to do a few meals. Regardless, IMO these junk foods should be MUCH more expensive than ... San Fransisco is free to tax the hell out of their citizens if they want, but it is still a scam. Those people are being taxed to drive down the price of corn, then being taxed again to drive back up the price of products made with corn. And on top of that the price of corn and other foods are being driven up by the ethanol scam. It is insanity. But as long as the insanity stays out there on the left coast, then I don't really care. Coming from SF nothing surprises me, it wouldn't surprise me if they offered joints to kids in lieu of them buying that can of soad. Must be nice... where (approx) do you live?I live in Norway, and here by the way the food is the most expensive in the world, even so for just 98 NOK (17,66 CAD) i bought the other day, 6 pieces of chicken, carrots, leeks, celery, swede, onion, enough to feed me for 3days when turned into a delicious casserole. I have to say though that many would find my dietry habits bizarre and they are miles from what the so called experts recommend. I can buy multiple frozen pizzas. Or a box of "chicken fingers" and fries that is enough to do a few meals.I find that really strange, and i have to say sad, that that is the case. One other thing to consider of course is t... most people, even if they are slim, do consume much more than is required to sustain oneselfOh yes, me included. :| |
