A finales de 1936 las tropas de Franco ya habían fusilado, bajo órdenes oficiales, a 50.000 personas. Según el ex –fiscal general del Estado, Carlos Jiménez Villarejo, <I>“los presos políticos fallecidos, entre los que se incluía a los fusilados tras un “proceso” y los muertos en las cárceles, desde abril de 1939 hasta el 30 de junio de 1944, fueron 192.684”</I>.
