Late last night, Senator Orrin Hatch (R-UT) pushed through an amendment in the Senate Finance Committee authorizing $50 million in funding for abstinence-only programs as part of Health Care Reform- despite over 10 years of evidence that these programs do not work.
By a razor-thin vote of 12-11, the Senators on the Finance Committee gave conservative ideology a victory over science and common sense.

Senators on the Finance Committee gave conservative ideology a victory over science and common sense
Republicans: "Healthcare reform will cost the taxpayers too much!"

So they add in more costs? And consider it a victory? Maybe this is their gameplan, keep adding in more programs to ensure failure:

"Sen. Orrin Hatch, R-Utah, said Democrats would live to regret it if they insist on a public plan."

So I take it you are for sex ed in schools? Or just for the nanny state. Abstinence only has been found ineffective, but let's just keep throwing tax dollars (bones) to it. http://www.themediaproject.com/topics/sexeducation.htm
Where is the common sense there?

No common sense there. Abstinence only education fails time and time again, but conservative just keep their heads in the sand.

No, I am not in favor of sex ed in schools. Since TV and every other form of media encourages rampant, casual sex it would be appropriate to tell kids that it's ok not to have sex before you are married...especially considering the abortion rate, the STD, the poverty....

And just as many studies can be found that say abstinence-only does help.

Yes, it's called parenting. Please don't get the wrong idea here jatfla, I am not trying to pick on you, I just had the idea that you were against healthcare reform. It just seems for those who are against it would also see this as wasteful spending. I would be more inclined to vote for healthcare reform than for this since it is more of a choice to have sex or not to more than it is a choice to get sick, grow old, have dementia, become disabled, or...

If you really believe that there are any credible studies that say abstinence only education works then you are a buffoon and an idiot.

Sahara, please, go on.

State of New Jersey, Department of Education said:

A significant challenge facing educators and school policy makers as the 21st century approaches is to assure that the youth of today will complete school prepared to be productive, responsible, caring, and healthy people. Today, this means that schools must go beyond nurturing the intellect to address the holistic needs of children. Among those needs are the knowledge, attitudes, and skills gained through a planned, sequential health education program that includes sexuality education designed to foster positive social and sexual behavior.
