They can come and take my acorns. Those things are practically chocking out my lawn and making a mess on my driveway. Here too. There seems to be a bumper crop; must be global warming. :~) This is nature taking its course when there are not enough predators..... people used to eat squirrel just a generation ago.... I wonder what it tastes like? Many of us will probably be hunting them again soon. I think I have more acorns this year than in the last 5. I've never noticed stepping all over them before this year. They are everywhere. I have a squirrel nest in both of my oak trees. Those squirrels are mean too. I can remember my Dad and his brothers going squirrel hunting; and of course, little boys use to be able to practice on them with their B-B guns. Sadly, times have changed. Our neighborhood is over-run with them, but even they are too few to deal with this acorn yield. rvnurse2b, Hell, I used to eat squirrel. I still would, they just don't let you shoot them out of the trees in the city. So now I just buy them sunflower seeds and sit on the swing on the back patio and watch our little dog futilely chase them around the yard. so by feeding them, you make more of them! Well, we had so much rain in the spring here in Southeast MO, that we've got a bumper crop--probably much of the Midwest what with all the spring flooding. This year we did not have a late frost in April as we had the two previous years, so that contributed to the bumper crop, also. I live right up against the Mark Twain National Forest, so squirrels are no problem--they have found plenty of acorns & hickory nuts. Plus, we can hunt them here. Our gun deer season just ended, now we're back in bow season, we've got another youth hunt coming up and black powder season. The deer hunting has been lousy for MO. as the deer aren't having to move to find food (acorns) so the hunters that sit in... satchmo- do they taste like chicken? how many squirrels would you have to bag for a decent casserole? Can't be much more than a mouthful of meat. Sorta' like the size of quail. I would imagine their taste is similar to that of rabbit, possum, raccoon. We certainly would have 'meat' for quite a while but I don't like the thought of skinnin' them. I think all the acorns are in Chicago. At first, I thought that was what the article was about. :~) |
