The tree is at least 800 years old. It took 8 sculptors more than 6 months to complete the work.

Does this mean that the tree won't get to be 801? Surely it could not survive all this 'carving'?

I believe the tree was already dead when it was done.
I think they just converted it in to a sculpture to reflect it's life through Chinese history.
