A lot of the pressure that rises in this time is related to the privacy concept. The entanglement of human life and the Web is creating an interesting space in which human's identity is being decoded to bits of information, that become part of the virtual space which is the free flow of the web. As such the question of possession arises. Who owns my (a metaphor of course ) identity? or in different words, do my identity belong to me?

I personally never do banking of any sort on-line. I thought it was safer. But, Revenue Canada has everything on me. Computerized government files on individuals, very scary.

I've been receiving spam that not only has my full name, but also my address in the subject line.

I applied for a grocery store discount card, used a fake name, fake address and fake phone number, didn't put any web-related information on the form, and a few months later got a spam asking me if I was interested in selling my home located at the fake address I put on the application (if it existed, that address would be in the middle of a river). The card I now have was dropped by a store worker carrying a double handsful of cards to the front desk, so now I have a card that has no name, address or any other kind of data stored.

Update: I just found out that I am listed as having lived at two addresses where I have never lived. One is my sister's house and the other is her daughters parents-in-laws' house. The disturbing thing about this is that the relationship between my sister and me makes Rush Limbaugh and the Clintons look like the best of friends. I have to wonder why my name is associated with residency in these two places and what these jerks are doing using my name.

Jorjor - Recently, someone clipped an article about employers searching the net to find info on perspective employees. Your experience shows why that is a bad idea. The internet can be entertaining as well as a great tool, but use with caution, because it's riddled with misrepresentation and outright lies.

I was also a plaintiff in an injury lawsuit a few years ago, and the defendant's lawyer asked me, during a break in the deposition proceedings, "Off the record - is it true that you were the secretary of the [Name Withheld] Pagan Society?". My answer was, "All that proves is that you know how t spell 'Google'". He might have wanted to rattle me, but it was a futile attempt. When I held that post, I was also an occasional guest on talk radio as a Pagan spokesman and also dealt with other new media.

I still do a search on myself about once a month or so, just to keep track of what's out there. That's how I found out about my sister and her daughter's in-laws using my name. I'm still tryi...
