Man invented the clocks,
clocks control the man.

I am amazed at the interest in this "how to have 36 hours ..." article

i'd say that it's a sign of how overwhelmed many people (myself included) feel trying to squeeze life into 24 hour days.

My motto :
The best human is not the one who is busiest, richest, or most knowledgeable but one who balances ones lifetime optimally.

I created a graph of daily time usage pattern (when we are a kid, a teenager ...an old person etc). Check this.

I remember when you posted this last time -- it's a very interesting look at the way we spend our lives. You're right about balance -- my father always told me that, but I didn't understand until recently. I always thought I needed to go from one extreme to the other to be content.

That is an interesting chart that you have developed, pmadhu_sudhan. From where did you obtain your data? If I am reading your chart correctly, I find it a bit discouraging that exploration and expression cease at age 60. That doesn’t give us much to look forward to in our golden years other than an abundance of maintenance/free time (I’m assuming that by maintenance you are referring to visit to the doctor, etc.). Also, do learning and training (I believe you are referring to improvement of job skills) stop at age 30? Given the turnover in today’s job market, many people are finding themselves starting their careers all over again in new fields. I do agree with you that we should all strive to attain the proper “balance” in life.

1. how many 60+ do you see exploring / expressing (blog, book).

2. Maintanence is sleeping, cleaning ... anything to keep ones body /mind operate. Including going to doctor.

3. I agree with job changes we all are forced to learn beyond 30.

In fact I used to list activities of my day as a calendar (2 hours of a project, 1 hour of lunch, 6 hours sleep etc). I realized that it is ridiculous to think myself as a better machine.

I think of all the great people who contributed to the world, I think no one bothered about productivity like (hours per day). It is a worker / machine mentality to think like that.

I hope to get out of this efficiency race. I want to live a full life not a fastest or richest one.

Oh I forgot to mention. this chart is more to illustrate how I felt about the time usage and doesnot accurately represent any particular persons life.

I would be interested to hear about your point-of-view of how much time we use (and should use).

this is anti- 36 hours in a day post !!!

If you are asking me how I would re-proportion the time allocations that make up your chart, I wouldn’t know where to begin. What you have shown seems to me to be generally accurate with the exceptions that I noted above. As far as how we should be using our time, that I believe is relative differing from person to person. The ideal would be to have that balance in our lives and the only scale with which to measure it would be our happiness. In short: if you’re happy then you’re using your time well.

Can someone tell those "36 hour a day aspirants" what turtle said it well

My happiness/balance comment referred to an ideal situation. Often times due to conditions beyond control, happiness in the short term is unattainable and you have to make the best of the situation.

I don't want to cause you any grief, pmadhu_sudhan, but I do see the need to proportion one’s time more efficiently in pursuit of a particular goal, aka being a “36 hour a day apirant “. Take, for instance, studying at a university. You could neglect your classwork and party night and day and be quite happy. But is that a good use of your time? And will that happiness carry you through the rest of your life? Or should you bite the bullet and study your ass off and hopefully find a better life as a result?
