We do them no favors by shielding them....or by interfering and solving all their social problems. But when to recognize that the threats are beyond childhood jousting....that's the question. The larger problem is the babying and lack of toughening up. Or at least it is the elimination of all that is uncomfortable that makes so many ill-prepared to stand up to the bullies. All the p.c. crap.( No "tag",no grades, putting dolls in front of sons to let them"choose their sexuality" or whatever they do.) (Not to apologize for bullies though) A timely article. Giving a child confidence and always a shoulder to cry on, so there's more of the former and so less of the second is so important. I'm relearning with my 20 month grand daughter. I've been actually told that threatening the life of a child is beneficial to that child. The story was that a boy was riding on a bus when another boy threatened him with a knife to give his lunch money and seat. The boy gave the money and the seat and then had to be taken home when arriving at school because he'd wet his pants. The parent, arguing with me over school safety, actually attempted to defend the position that children socially adjust through violence. He said he was glad his kid experienced the incident because his son learned to respect others through fear. He said that his child was socially superior to other children that did not experience that encounter because his kid wa... righthand....you have a grand-daughter!!! Here I was sure you were a radical 20-something. :~) Enjoy her. The experience only gets better and better. |
