thunderbird confuses the hell out of me. i cant seem to ever install it right, i'll delete it and then weeks later reinstall and delete and again every once in a while

It's a pitty to hear that. I like it a lot and use it, mostly, without problems. At least, with pretty less problems that with Outlook Express...
But, nowadays, IMO, the best email client is GMail!

Webmail clients are less secure than local POP or IMAP clienst.

Besides, Gmail has no folders. I have tons of different types of mail that I categorize into different folders, with filters to send everything where it belongs. The best Gmail can do is labels. Labels!

Folders and a well functioning search feature are like having an office with filing cabinets, everything well organized and in it's place. If you need a specific file, you can go right to the drawer, and then right to the file.
