new research finds one thing that varies little across the nation: the liking for online pornography. Those states that do consume the most porn tend to be more conservative and religious than states with lower levels of consumption, the study finds.Seems kinda contradictory to me...if it varies very little, then why does it matter? Those who comment on my blog posts, when I have pointed out some disreputable condition of conservative states, are now taking to pointing out that red states have inherited many poor and non-white people, and the condition under discussion is surely their fault. Or else it's the feds' fault for disrupting state sovereignty, against which such states are helpless to make any real progress. Poor, poor, little victimized red states! All those good white Republicans forced to live under the lash of the Federal government! Wanting so badly to avoid contaminating non-whites with assistance, so they may lift themselves up out of poverty, but what's the use with the Feds involved, obstructing freedom on every hand? While the study finds that red states have higher rates of subscriptions to the pornographic websites of a major provider, it does not follow, as Edelman implies here, that conservatives are more likely to consume porn. One plausible alternative scenario is that porn consumption is not related to political views, but in conservative states access to offline adult entertainment is restricted or especially stigmatized, so people who want it are more likely to take advantage of a discreet online subscription to adult entertainment. Of course, it is also possible that conservatives are more likely to consume pornography. We just do not know. Ironically, some conservative Clipmarks [url=htt... I suspect that the findings may be accurate. The assumption is that conservatives are more likely to consume porn. However, in red states pornography is not readily available to those who may want to consume it. Alternatives to the internet are extremely limited. This limitation leads to on-line consumption. I really doubt the human dynamics vary this dramatically from state to state as it relates to porn. Availability is the mover. On the other hand, people put their money where their hearts and minds are. The fact that Conservative states have higher per capita charitable donations, not even counting tithing, is hardly something to argue with. It is obvious. You don't see community organizers on every street corner in red states. You don't see community organizers on every street corner in red states. Also, the absence of leftists who despise charity mean there are more givers as a percentage. I doubt Obama's intent to punish red states for their charitable contributions will make much difference in their willingness to give. But, it is just like a materialist to try. The fact that Conservative states have higher per capita charitable donations, not even counting tithing, is hardly something to argue with.Tell that to the people who use bogus statistics to make that argument then. |
