Interestingly, though, the Chinese language has had a long tradition of verbal taboos. Words can be considered unlucky because they are homophonic to another word that is culturally repugnant. It's as if the English word "pismire" were to be avoided because it contains a syllable that sounds the same as "piss". Perhaps it seems worse to non-Chinese because the imposition is governmental and the censored content is political; it happens elsewhere, too.
