ouyangwulong says: Although there is a lot of talk about sexism, and how it is to blame for Hillary's defeat, I think people are barking up the wrong tree. Obama never campaigned against Hillary on the basis that as a woman she would be "unelectable" because conservative "swing voters" would never elect a woman. On the other hand, she did make that case against Obama on account of his race. In fact, nobody ever questioned Hillary's ability to lead the country, as a woman or otherwise. The should have: her foreign policy is scary and ignorant. But the most sexist person in the race was Hillary herself. Her campaign, with the pant-suits and tough guy attitude (especially on Iran) seemed to reflect her own belief that if a woman was going to win, she had to convince people that she was "one of the guys." I think almost anyone who would vote for Obama would also vote for a woman - if it was the right woman. What I'm not willing to do is vote for any woman simply for the sake of making history. Welcome back Austin, have missed your presence out here. How was the trip? And it's too bad - when she let herself be who she was - as in her concession speech - she was a magnetic personality. It's like she lost by trying to be what the old stereotype says a woman has to be. i concur masbury Masbury, I think Hilary is a complex and imperfect American, as are we all. She was appealing in her most human moments, including parts of her farewell speech, because she shows us a complicated and often conflicted individual - much like ourselves. This makes her an appealing person, a tragic hero, a fascinating magnet for news, and the object of a national love-hate fixation. However, I don't think it makes her a good leader. In fact, I don't know if Hilary ever showed true leadership ability. She has great statistical knowledge, organization and discipline. These are certainly praiseworthy. However she lacks warmth, humor, graciousness, and humility - and these are deadly shortcoming... Oh and thanks mona. Hopefully I will be able to clip some pictures from my vacation soon. Nice to see you back! |
