I saw some tv show - years ago - that featured (relatively) recent Maori folklore tales of huge birds swooping from the sky and flying away with unwary souls.

I think this is one bird I hope is truly extinct and not just lurking around somewhere waiting to be re-discovered.

The Native Americans, mostly tribes from the plains ,have a similar mythology about the Thunder Bird , which hunted the buffalo.
