I saw some tv show - years ago - that featured (relatively) recent Maori folklore tales of huge birds swooping from the sky and flying away with unwary souls. fta: "Scofield said the findings are similar to what he found in Maori folk tales. "The science supports Maori mythology of the legendary pouakai or hokioi, a huge bird that could swoop down on people in the mountains and was capable of killing a small child," he said." Ah, there ya go (thanks) - I didn't imagine it I think this is one bird I hope is truly extinct and not just lurking around somewhere waiting to be re-discovered. The Native Americans, mostly tribes from the plains ,have a similar mythology about the Thunder Bird , which hunted the buffalo. |
