....but bearing arms should not be a right.
Reading this article even skimming it, the obvious truth just jumps out at you.
More guns just do not make people safer.

More guns brings more guns and death.

Why is this so hard to fathom?

Look at countries that do not have the right to bear arms willi-nilly.

See their crime rate and safety.

We are fast down the slippery slope and only picking up speed.

But not in this country where the government can threaten martial law at the drop of a hat and has. This place is too unstable to only let the authorities and military carry.

Years ago Kennesaw GA (just down the road from me) made it manditory that every home have some kind of firearm in it. Their crime rate fell considerably and continues to do so. I don't agree with carrying guns everywhere. We all know there are people who should't carry guns. Unfortunately they are the ones who WILL carry them. Kinda like people who shouldn't drink but do to an excess. I hope it never comes to everybody packing.

I can agree that bearing guns should not be a right, but a privilege, just as having a driver's license is. A privilege that can be taken away if you abuse it.

Thanks, kat, for your reason. That IS the reason the right to bear arms was conceived in the first place, and to this day there is no better solution. All other concerns pale in the face of that reason.

Why not read how well gun control is working in countries that do have strict gun laws.

http://www.telegraph.co.uk/news/newstopics/politics/lawandorder/5712573/UK-is-violent-crime-capital-of-Europe.html

Our country is one of the safest because it is dangerous for the criminals to commit a crime against someone who is armed.

In England, the bad guys have the guns. The citizens have umbrellas.

Oh, you mean like that guy they shot 8 times in the head down in the subway?

Calling a drivers license a privilege is bogus. Without one, most Americans would have their livelihood cut off as well for lack of transportation to work. Now, THAT'S a crime! Why not just kick them when they are down. It's the American way.

As I recall, when looking up the statistics before in another clip or blog discussing other countries who banned guns, that crime using other weapons such as knives and clubs went through the roof and crime as a whole increased dramatically.

Simple solution: Ban guns, knives, baseball bats, clubs, sticks, shovels, hoes, rocks, purses, fists, fingers.. oh well, you get the point.

Often it is a lack of education and or money that kills people not the guns themselves.

As was correctly pointed out by jay8h, If you take the guns away people just use other weapons. I can think of a whole list of things that if I had the option, I would pick getting shot every time rather than be attacked by them.

I forget who wrote it, from this site, but I read not so long ago:

"guns kill people like spoons make micheal moore fat"

Harsh as it may be, it illustrates a very good point.

In a country with an unarmed population only the criminals and the government (All too often one and the same) have guns and the citizens are completely at their mercy.

Governments you must remember a...

hmmmm...

Spoons vs Bullets.
I don't see the TSA making it difficult to travel with a spoon while flying.

A gun in the hands of an avg American should only be necessary for hunting. NOTHING else.

If we properly educate our children, feed and clothe and provide jobs which bring dignity to all Americans, and properly train and educate our police forces in our cities, then we will not need to further arm ourselves against each other.

This escalation of arms does not make us safer as a nation. It only increases the incidents of crazies who kill our students in their dorm rooms and classses, kill those who rightfully want to become American citizens, and millions of innocent people.

I do not ...

I am totally anti-gun, BUT,on the other hand, if I lived in the US, as unstable as things are now, as kat pointed out, I would most definitely want a way to defend myself against a corrupt government. But would a gun help at all against against the whole military or police or NSA or FEMA or whoever? It seems like it's a false sense of security. David against Goliath.

I live in a country with strict gun control laws, but of course there will always some criminal elements, who will arm themselves. The th...

True. But look at the history of governments and countries throughout time. It seems more the norm that the exception, that they turn on the people at some point in time. Another saying is...

The most powerful military force on earth? The US citizenry. While there is something to be said about the fact that the enormous power of the US military could severely dampen the impact of our citizens rising up against the government by force, as the survivalist mindset spreads it becomes a much more difficult to see it being a walk in the park for them. The PRIMARY reason to have an armed citizenry is to assure that the people control the government. End of story. It's not about hunting or being attacked in your home by some random bad guy, it's about control of the power which you obey by consent, not for knuckling under to tyra...

Somethings are best left, you can’t convince Religious believers of anything at all; for their belief isn't based upon evidence, but instead on a deep seated psychological need to believe.

Anyway where was I

Once people realise that the government as their protector is a just a myth the need for the second amendment becomes far more apparent its primary purpose is to protect the citizens from the federal and/or state governments should they ever become irreversibly corrupted to the point where the 1st amendment no longer does anything. the point of it is to ensure protection of the other rights.
