" I’m convinced that culture and art, with its integrity preserved, can create important added value in conjunction with other areas of society.”

The programme works from a broader definition of culture which, along with theatre visits, also includes activities such as visits to public gardens and enrolling in handicrafts courses.

“The sort of cultural activities to be arranged would be experiences which strengthen self-confidence and provide continuity; culture should be a complement to regular care."

The philosophy and idea behind this is clear. The healthier and happier a population is, the more productive they become. Taking care of people is the top priority. It pays off in the end, economically and socially, by keeping everyone in the loop of society. That's the Scandinavian way..

Since the election in 2006, Sweden has been governed by a centre-right majority government. That's worth mentioning, I reckon. So don't just put this down to some bleeding hearts leftists playing hippie-doodah with the taxpayer's money. It's just *normal policy* to do things this way. Left AND right.

Ever wonder why?

Good stuff TN. I was recently talking with a friend who has found that doing pottery is a key to her sobriety and peace. Basking in beauty and creativity is so healing. I want to move to sweden!
