Like many biblical stories, the Tower of Babel is a tall tale with no basis in evidence or reality, and so I ask: Do you really believe that?

THe story that you have quoted a portion of here is not the story as it reads in the Bible. I can see why many people don't believe the Bible anymore expecially since they think that all these new versions are the real thing. there has been a lot a changing.

The King James Version passes the test.

Thanks jussy. I assume you're talking about...
God witnesses this and is upset, not because the building of the tower displays hubris, but because he actually fears that humanity will become omnipotent if they complete the tower (11:6)
You're right. This is not how it reads in the King James version. It is a stretch to turn "and now nothing will be restrained from them, which they have imagined to do" into omnipotent.
So other than that, it is a completely believable story in your mind?

A tall Ziggurat means more knowledge; knowledge means more power. Biblical writers, with all their hate on Babylon after being captivated by Nabukadnezzar, showed their bigotry and fear against wisdom and knowledge in the Book of Genesis.

"The Tower" was a sophisticated Ziggurat - the symbol of Babylonians' astronomical wisdom. They were trying to observe and understand the universe, while on the other hand, believers of Jahweh religion used to see the knowledge as a "source of evil."

Remember the Forbidden Apple tale in Genesis: "If they eat it, they are going to be like us." So, humanity should be kept away from knowledge and wisdom should be replaced by faith.
