WTF, this is some bulls**t. What is wrong with drawing a gun. I drew guns and weapons all the time at school when I was younger as something amusing rather than sit listen and read. And I have never gone round shooting people.
If school work was more practical than theory then most people wouldn't even have time to piss around sketching.
The best way to learn anything is to trial and error projects yourself.
