The sign does not violate the Constitution. It is not an act of Congress, it does not prohibit the free exercise of religion, and it does not establish one denomination over another.

It may be out of sync with prevailing jurisprudential fashion, but that is not the same as being unconstitutional.

Whether or not it is an act of Congress is irrelevant. The sign was put up by and maintained by the local government. Therefore it is unconstitutional.

It plainly endorses Christianity.

To violate the Constitution, it has to be Congress, or at most the federal government. Go ahead and go read it before responding.

The Constitution does not prohibit a town from endorsing Christianity. Again, give it a read.

yankeepoo, it seems you never got to the 14th Amendment in your reading of the Constitution. The relevant section is this:

All persons born or naturalized in the United States, and subject to the jurisdiction thereof, are citizens of the United States and of the State wherein they reside. No State shall make or enforce any law which shall abridge the privileges or immunities of citizens of the United States; nor shall any State deprive any person of life, liberty, or property, without due process of law; nor deny to any person within its jurisdiction the equal protection of the laws.

The ACLU has fought this battle enough times against enough small towns who try to pull crap like this that the courts have, in effect, established a presumptive (if not legalistic) precedent that signs of this nature are a violation of the First Amendment separation of Church and State.

It's just like the issues surrounding prayer and other religious activity in schools, or the placement of religious monuments on public land. In both cases, Congress neither initiates nor sanctions these acts, but the counts - which are the branch of government that determines what is or is not constitutional - have consistently held that they are UNconstitutional - and they have done so through both liberal courts and conservative.

It took an executive order to get the govt. funding in for private school. (faith based initiatives) Hmmm? Wasn't it Bush did that in violation of the Constitution?

What does a country do about that!?

I find that it always helps to go back to the source for each clip. In this case, I read that the signs "...were originally erected under the direction of former mayor Callie Mobley, a woman who had to leave office after pleading guilty of tax evasion and of stealing $140,000 from the town. According to this convicted felon, "I believe in one God, one Baptism, and one Lord," and that's why she put the signs up in the first place.

Evidently Ms. Mobley doesn't believe in "Thou shalt not steal".

Are they saying that if you don't believe, you can't live there?
No.
Really, people. I don't understand how this kind of thing can be so bothersome. So what if some people want to profess their faith? At the same time, who cares if you have to occasionally listen to people who do so? Its called tolerance.
And yes, obviously, someone stupid put that sign up. Any right-minded person would have forseen the trouble this would cause.

It wasn't simply "somebody" who put up that sign. It was an agent of the government. Comprende? Sheesh!
