I am especially appalled by his position on gays in the military. Israel, the most macho army in the world, openly welcomes gays to serve. England does the same as do most other countries. But once again a politician is willing to make America the laughing stock of the world with their adherence to puritanical and sexually repressed attitudes. Conservatives have totally gone nuts in America. I will ALWAYS respect John McCain as the hero he is for the rigors and horrors he endured as a prisoner of war. He has earned that. I, too, used to feel there was some reason to afford him respect as something of a fair-minded conservative, but that was obviously an error in my judgment, as he has sadly proven time and time again. I guess this could in a sense be construed as a great example of supporting the troops while hating the war. That's a very astute observation, BartendingBear. I should have mentioned that I too, will always have respect for his service during Viet Nam and for what he endured as a POW. He is a true military hero. But all that being said, he is now asking to be judged as a politician and statesman, not as a military man. And, as you say, I made the mistake of confusing the two issues. I really permitted my respect for his military service as an indication of his political and social beliefs. As time has moved on, I was proven to have been mistaken. As a gay man, I find his comments about gays in the military highly offensive, but not being a one issue voter, I also disagree with his position ... |
