Walter Williams begs to differ vehemently, while endorsing the book The Real Lincoln.

Interesting you should assert such on Independence Day, of all times, since the War for Southern Independence was fought on precisely the same principle as the Revolutionary War, i.e. to resist a tyrannical government. Lincoln trampled on the foundation of America, the "consent of the governed", with pure force and power--a Union by Force!. Williams writes:

Untrue. The Northern States could have their Union and the southern states called the Confederate States of America.

This would be a division on the same principle of North and South Vietnam, North and South Korea, China and (S. China) Taiwan, etc., where the tyrannical empire is always based in the North, and the Southern "rebels" have won their freedom, and separated.

South Carolina, the first state to secede, appealed to this in their "Declaration of the Immediate Causes Which Induce and Justify the Secession of South Carolina from the Federal Union":

In the year 1765, that portion of the British Empire embracing Great Britain, undertook to make laws for the government of that portion composed of the thirteen American Colonies. As I say there would have been no powerful United States. It should not be forgotten either that other nations were ready to jump in for the spoils.
