"This is a sad day for the GOP," Michael Smerconish, a longtime conservative radio host in Philadelphia, told the Huffington Post. "He is what the party needed to be. They need to cultivate more Specters instead of deriding him as a RINO [Republican In Name Only].... The fact that Michael Steele is deriding him for his left wing record is just the same type of bullshit of playing to the base."
Pointing to a Washington Post poll that showed only 21 percent of voters identify themselves as Republicans, Smerconish concluded: "I think the number is down to 20 percent."

Meanwhile Sen. Olympia Snowe of Maine, one of the few remaining moderate Republicans in the Senate, told the Huffington Post Tuesday that Specter's abandonment of the GOP is "devastating," both "personally and I think for the party."

The likes of a hypocritical piece of crap like Limbaugh being a mouth piece for the GOP should be enough to make anyone question the viability of the Republican Party.

And you approve of Specter who abandoned his party when times are tough to save his own career then to even criticize them to do all the damage he could before leaving? He is definitely a Democratic liberal and will lie, cheat, steal or do whatever it takes to feather his own nest. Then you call Limbaugh a hypocrite?

jay8h,

The party abandon Specter. There use to be tons of moderate Rockeller Republicans throughout the east and northeast.

The rebubbacans sold out for the souther strategy of Strom Thurmond, parading behind "states rights" rhetoric to get the redneck vote. They got it and now it's killing them.

There is not a single Republican Congressional representative from the New England region.

Rebubbacans were more than willing to take fence jumpers during the Reagan years and now those types are liars and cheaters. You see how stupid you sound. That why your party is dying.

Sorry, I agree with jay. Specter is the hypocrite and has been for years. When I heard him on Fox News explaining how he was going to vote for the Stimulus Bill without even knowing what was in it...I concluded that the man was not a decent representative of the people. He ADMITTED that he didn't know what was in the bill.

And you know what??? New England isn't the entire United States. "States Rights"...well, it's still in the Constitution until Liberals get it changed. Red-necks? How tacky. Just what I would expect from the arrogant intelligentsia who believe that THEY are the only holders of thought and sense. Every day we learn just how stupid, entitled, and un-American those in...

Is the Republican Party dying? No, it's dead!

And will stay dead as long as it stays on the far right of the political spectrum.

Intelligence? Howard Dean, the former Chairman of the Democratic Party realized you can't write off a part of the country. He instituted the 50 state plan and now the Democratic Party controls the House, Senate, and the Presidency.

You can keep shooting the finger to the people in New England. It probably makes you feel real good. But you sure as hell won't be the majority party.

"States Rights" was a code word for exploiting racism amongst white voters....... IN THE SOUTH. It had nothing to do with the constitution. The Republican party once had a proud tradit...

Seems to me the Repubs are not learning from their mistakes as is shown here by not one but two comments. Specter isn't a traitor. I guess some people forget where we are. We're in America where even a lowly politician isn't forced to stick to the party he was represented especially when it now is packed full of racism and fear inciting tactics to which this country has not seen for a VERY long time. If the few remaining Repubs want to believe the Repub party is going strong then keep yourself disillusioned but don't blame the rest when they jump ship. Specter didn't leaves when "times are tough" or he would have left long before Nov 4th during the Palin Hate rallies. You believe what YOU li...

Jafla: It seems the very last line of this clip was intended for you. You asked this:
Is the Republican Party dying? No! It's revising and purifying...and well it should.
For years, many in the conservative world have wished for an ideologically purer GOP. Their wish has been granted. Happy?"
And it seems they have a question for you. Before you try to say you are happy, try not to be honest.
