Its taste and its properties with regard to bodily needs as well as its utility as a means of preserving food are inextricably bound up with what it is. If you are salt, then you must be salty. It is not in Jesus's metaphor that the salt is in people, commingling with who they are - an influence on them that might recede or be eliminated - but that they ARE salt. You can't separate those who are salty from the properties of salt within them."

I think it is an example of Attic Wit. I do so agree with the idea of loving your enemy but it is hard. Charity (caritas) begins at home and home is where the heart is. And how many of us can feel at home in a loving heart?
