When Spiritualmonkey and I moved to our current apartment, we didn't bother to get the cable hooked up. Eventually we realized the TV was taking up a huge amount of space and that we could just watch DVDs on the computer, and we got rid of the TV and DVD player entirely. It's been about 6 (7?) years now, and I'd have to agree that "happier" is definitely one of the effects of not watching TV. Besides, between YouTube and Netflix, there's not much you'll actually miss. Until just a few years ago I went through a very lonely, unhappy time and often found myself turning on the tv, trying to forget my troubles by watching one mindless show after another. So for me I watched tv because I was unhappy. Fortunately I have been able to make some dramatic changes in my life that have made it more enjoyable. I found a life partner who shares my interests and who, like me, prefers to spend time doing things other than watch tv. With cable tv prices rising (along with nearly everything else, it seems) we had to decide between paying for cable tv and high speed internet. Guess which one we chose? When I have been weak with flu or something, I have loved watching easy nonsense on television all day and night. Strangely, when I am healthy I can't stand it. It looks like television is a refuge of sorts - perhaps an escape. I don't watch tv - the clips here are far more interesting! makes sense, what's social in watching TV? |
