Nonetheless, I have no doubt that Prozac has saved a great many lives throughout the years. For me, depression is like any other physiological condition and needs to be treated as such. An important clarification, though, is that the symptom which we call depression can be caused by many different factors. Sometimes it may be psychological, but it can also be caused by chemical imbalances and hormonal changes. In these later cases depression is biological and needs to be treated as such. The fact that so few people distinguish between the two, and the fact that more common human conditions like boredom and frustration can be confused with depression are some of the biggest reasons why Prozac and other anti-depressants have been over prescribed. However, many depressives, and people with other dangerous biological conditions effecting moods wage a "war against treatment" th... Doctors need to take the time to diagnose properly. I don't see that happening within our medical system, espcially our mental health medical system, which is geared towards those who can afford the best healthcare. At the end of the day, it's the medical health care provider who writes the script. |
