Recently I visited a small town outside Cape Town called Hermanus. The town thrives during the holiday season and is well known for its whale watching. The reason for the visit was because a colleague is conducting a sustainable waste management lecture and needed some working examples of good recycling initiatives.

She came across the Swop-Shop. This initiative encourages children from the informal settlement to recycle by rewarding them points, which at the end of the day they can trade-in for items of basic needs, toiletries, clothes and such.
