When I was visiting friends in California we went to San Francisco to see the sights and had a wonderful time. Your clip reminds me of one of the requests for money we received while there. Three young people (two girls and a guy) were obviously "highly" enjoying the beautiful day, smiling at us as we approached each other on the sidewalk. The young man quickly climbed into a small tree and hung upside down just as we reached the tree and called out to us, "Could you give us $5?" I smiled and said, "Sorry, no." He then grinned and said, "If you don't give us $5 I'll fall out of this tree." I grinned back at him and said, "Go for it!" and we walked on. I could hear the girls giggling and sayi... I have relatives in S.F. It is a great town in many ways but its mild climate (both physical and social) brings in many homeless. I am a native to big cities and, though a sensitive guy by nature, am somewhat hardened by my time in them to the conditions of the homeless. But it was in S.F. that I had my mind blown away when I turned a corner to see a young woman and her two children (about 5 and 3 yrs old) sitting on a busy sidewalk, covered in filth, silently looking down and being widely ignored. This broke my shell. Maybe that was fate's hand (my fate preferably to theirs). I sure hope they found a home. |
