masbury says: "N---ers will occasionally chimp out like this, am I right?" Sample comments from the independent pro-Palin blog, to which Palin has written "Thank you for all you are doing for women, families, children... America!" In the contexts, "she" refers to Michelle Obama, "he" to Barack. Dulios and I just got the chance to watch Roots and Roots Next Generation again after almost 30 years. It was a very formative part of our childhoods, but we discussed how the details had faded. To remember all of the hows and why's behind racist traditions is painful and shameful. The murderous, pure evil of torturing 25 million people that surrounded the years from 1650-1965 is still alive in our people who can't let go of our/their lesser selves. I told dulios that I am glad that our first Black president does not have a slave name. It is more symbolically positive for him to have his own African name. My best friend in graduate school has a picture of her great grandma, the last slav... Yes, sad to say that today, still, in this country there exists individual/groups that can hold such thoughts and feelings and not disintegrate from the burden of carrying such vile emotions. Seems we as a nation still have much to do. I suppose the first question we would need to address is what could make an individual feel such pain and fear to make them lash out instead of want to embrace and work with those who want to help make our already great country even better? Actually, I made the observation last night to a friend that a very damaged America may well be rescued by a black leader, Obama, while our current crop of top criminals are all rich white guys! What a flip! I am so glad to have lived long enough to see this, and I trust the naysayers will be won over by the success of the next 8 years under an intelligent, law abiding, Constitutionalist helped along by pragmatic, intelligent leaders from both parties. Contrast this with the total incompetence of the Bush years! W has done NOTHING in his life but fail and leave ruin in his wake. He is the best Democrat ever... having single handedly destroyed the Republican party and removing its ... What excellent comments these are! The story of the resilience of black peoples, emerging from centuries of slavery with precious few resources to bring it about that emergence, is one of the great epics of world history. It needs to be told, and studied, and re-told - in all its ugliness and heroism - for it is not finished until every American knows it well and owns his or her role as an heir of it. These are good times, in which the telling of truth may be possible in ways it has not been before. |
