I did allot of research for an article I wrote and even interviewed Shirley Phelps over the phone. This is allot of over exaggerated propaganda. The Phelps were not even well known until they protested at Matthew Shepard's funeral in 1998.They even put up a countdown clock on their website counting the days he is "burning in hell". He has a son who distanced himself from the church and family. Al Gore's staff rented a church and some chairs from the Phelps having no clue who he was.

Now the Phelps are known for protesting at soldiers and gay peoples funerals.

This article is simple overexaggeration and propaganda from the far right. Look at the source. In the 80's they were mostly suing everyone they could. They were not yet known for what they are now. The church is mostly family , 80% related and 70% are lawyers. There frivolous lawsuits are what keep the church going. Fred was disbarred. Shirley is the new ring leader. Opposition groups have removed their names from their own websites and the media largely now ignores them, as we all should.
