According to his biographical volume, A Reporter's Life (1996), for a period in the '60s, the word for "anchorman" in Sweden was "cronkiter". When he said, "That's the way it is," you had to believe him. Nobody would hire him today.

He broke the news of the Kennedy assassination, reported extensively on Vietnam and Civil Rights and Watergate, and seemed to be the very embodiment of TV journalism.
