I nominate "The Kite Runner" by Khaled Hosseini.

An amazing story about two young boys growing up in Afghanistan pre-Russian invasion. (I think)
It is haunting. What a great story-teller. The characters come alive. The author read the audio which gave it the added flavor of an Afgan. I read where they are going to make it into a movie. It will be hard to give the characters the depth they have in the book.
