Derek has said he open to the idea of a Desktop Version of Clipmarks, meaning a version of Clipmarks that would save your clippings on your hard drive. He asked that we start a discussion about what we'd want to see in the desktop client. Derek asks that we indicate how imperative a desired feature is.

Also, if there is anyone besides travislaborde and myself who would like to see a desktop version, please say so here.

This grew out of the discussion on this clipmark

This is a great idea and the cool thing about it is, you could keep them on a pendrive if you wanted to carry them with you.

However, several questions come to mind...

Are they crossing any copyright boundaries?

Would it store your clipmarks both here and on the desktop?

Will you be able to delete or manage clips you've saved?

BBW, I highly doubt that it will cross copyright boundaries. You can already save whatever web content you want, using either your browser's "save" function, or the Scrapbook or Evernote extensions for Firefox. Clipmarks just makes it more convenient to save web content, and easier to manage.

I understand that and I am also aware there are dozens of other apps you can use to save web content. I am only looking at the future. The copyright freaks are out of control lately. When clipmarks becomes this huge conglomerate and some schmuck wants to sue someone... I don't want it to be them.

My idea, that i talked about with Eric and Adam, was kind of mashup of ScrapBook and Clipmarks. Think of the following features:

Clips are saved online and offline
Clips are synced on different machines
Clips can be edited, highlighted and annotated
Multipart-Clips can be arranged
Clips can be appended or inserted to become multipart-Clips

I don't know too much of programming, except that anything can be done (with time and money ), but i think, these additional features would really help to outline, that Clipmarks plays in a different league than Notebook...

About the copyright questions: I also don't think, that there are infringements, but asked Eric to ask someone who knows for sure.

The content in Clipmarks links back to the original source, so there are no claims, that it is new content. This is the reason, why i would not let people ADD stuff to a clip but only DELETE parts of it. I think, personal annotation is something different, because it is clear, that it is not part of the original source.

I'm not a fan of synchronizing data across multiple desktops (or even browsers), I'm fine with all my clipmarks on the web as long as they are private. However, I would vote for clipmarks desktop like google desktop or yahoo Widget (is Yahoo Widget already possible?) so I could launch it directly through my desktop, but this is no big wish, the website on my firefox tab works equally fine.

I like the idea of porability. I would argue however that no one will ever be happy with whatever desktop version that is created. If it is Scrapbook, somoen will be happy, if it is evernot, then others shall, etc.

Perhaps the best route is to allow a XML dump to a local conent store, then have a plu-in or importer for ScrapBook, Evernote, etc. Let those companies pull in Clipmarks content. I would think they would be honored to work to Clipmark enable their products. Heck perhaps Clipmarks team could facilitate a WebService API to allow these program to talk.

My reason in thinking this route is I have been in situations of having to support both web based and desktop based application...

Very interesting idea rob, i will def discuss that one with eric.

The downside to Rob's idea is that as far as I know, Scrapbook and Evernote do not have tagging capabilities, so if you downloaded all of your clips to scrapbook or Evernote you could not really access your tags offline.

But I can totally see Rob's point that developing a desktop counterpart to a web service could be a nightmare, so his suggestion may be the most efficient way to go about this. Just thinking about how the desktop client would interface with the website gives me a headache (and I know nothing about programming).

Just to say that since my Browser updates I can't clip... managed to reinstall the extension but when I try to clip it freezes.

Hey ycc. I just installed the 0.5.15 on both a Mac and PC and they seem to be working OK for me. Could you email me if you get a sec and let me know what operating system you're on -- adam@clipmarks.com Thanks!

I just want to add that I totally support rmowery's idea of an XML output and/or usable Web API.
Any news on this front?

Firefox Scrapbook + Tagging = Clipmarks

Clipmarks is way too good, the idea will be copied all over the place. I want to run it as a server, an opensource version will be a killer app.

I would be a happy man if the clipmarks team released a web service I could consume.

A clipMarks desktop set up similar to google desktop would be interesting to say the least.
1. I want to be able to have Clippers email- Either a ClipMarks Email client (With Address book) or The ability to add emails of your followed clippers to your address book.
Subject to the clipper making their email available to you via their profile.
2. The ability to add clippers to your messenger client under a ClipMarks heading. Also subject to authorization in the profile (sorta like a PM in a bulletin board but in realtime)
3. A ClipMarks folder system that organizes your saved clips by Keyword or Tag. My ClipMarks in My Documents.
4. A realtime Who's Online scroll
5. A ClipMarks...

As for offline storage:
You can email the clip to yourself
you can go to print and save the print to a folder on your hard drive.
You can take a screen capture and save it.
I'm not sure but you might be able to select all and save it to a word doc so the links are active.

A ClipMarks Collection Editor - I have clips in collections that I would like to move around because I found myself creating a collection title after clipping multiple clips to another collection. EX: Collection art has clips of artists sites. Collection Artist was created after I had artists in the Art collection and I would like to move them to the Artist Collection.
Skwirl, you can edit your collections, but you have to go to each clip and edit to select the new collection.

Drag and drop would be alot easier!
Thanks for the tip. I will be very busy when I get around to doing this.

You have alot of clips to manage. You might need your own personal clip assistant to work all that out.
