I was absolutely unprepared for this.

And while I am in tears over the photo and the fact that the journalist is said to have committed suicide three months later, I'm also reeling from reading that the toddler crawled to a UN Food Camp and no one knows what happened after that. (It seems pretty likely that the child died -- vultures hunt by sense of smell, and it is possible to be too far starved to live long enough to recover.)

The photographer, after snapping the shot didn't rescue the child? I don't understand...

It's hard to say but we can't assume the photographer took it lightly. My guess is that there was so much suffering that it was overwhelming. In starvation, re feeding can and often is fatal.
I think/hope that this one photo did more good then the photographer could ever have imagined.
