I don't care what people say, Don Imus' firing was crap. He was trying to be flip and funny; facetious toward the hip-hop culture.. Had he been a black commentator, no problem. He didn't say the N-word unless *nappy-headed ho* is the N-word. I'm equally tired of reverse racism. I disagree with the Author of this article. I do NOT think the N word is valid though being a libertarian I *don't* agree with censorship either. I also don't think the *c* word [for women] is valid either...and as much as I love the "Vagina Monologues" I think it's ridiculous that the objects of abuse of the word try to "make it their own." Why? Rise above it and *quit* giving it power altogether. Trying to "rec... I agree with you digits. To quote a famous nominalist named Humpty Dumpty in Through The Looking Glass: "When I use a word," Humpty Dumpty said, in rather a scornful tone, "it means just what I choose it to mean -- neither more nor less. Hate speech is specifically defined in reference to protected groups. @digits - about Don Imus and reverse racism Here's a test: would Imus say - blonde-haired hos or straight-headed hos, or even blue-eyed hos when describing white female athletes? I guess those college educated "nappy-headed hos" should be pleased to have received the respectful attention that their white counterparts will never have the privilege to enjoy. Besides, Don Imus was commenting on BASKETBALL,which is about sports, not hip-hop culture. Just because black people play the game doesn't morph an entire sport or team into hip-hop culture. And here's tip: not all young black people are into hip-hop, (pass it around). To paraphrase Tim Wise. a white anti-racism activist: When nooses ar... Pop for Digit's comment. would Imus say - blonde-haired hosProbably not. Us blondes are usually referred to as bimbos. it means just what I choose it to meanExactly. People can call me what they want, as long as they don't EVER call me a republican. That is just TOO hateful. *LOL* Just kidding. Not. Which "N" word is this clip about? Nappy? Noose? Or that other one? So many words off limits these days that it is impossible to narrow them down using just one letter. Don Imus was commenting on BASKETBALL,which is about sports, not hip-hop culture. Just because black people play the game doesn't morph an entire spoNow that seems to be where you go completely wrong. How could you say such a thing? If he was talking about Basketball he wouldn't have said what he did. He was doing his routine, It was comedy! Good or bad that was the point of it! And yes he'd say the same thing about anybody if the cultural context was in place because that was his stick, his style, how he made millions of dollars. He was doing his JOB and while you may not like it he didn't invent the world and he wasn't forcing anyone to listen to him! How could you say such a thing? If he was talking about Basketball he wouldn't have said what he did.He was describing the Rutger's womens basketball team after they beat the Tennessee team which Dom Imus described as CUTE, not hos, but CUTE. The comment was not only in the context of a basketball game, but also hypocritical. But what the hell, racist and sexist jokes are great! And racism is profitable! We all have to stand-up for capitalism. So, yanceducat if anyone ever tells a racist of sexist joke at the expense of you, your friends or loved ones, just laugh. I can laugh or not laugh as I may choose. What I will not do is to censor him. I will do what liberals claim one is to do; answer bad speech with more better speech Of course, if one side gets the microphone and the other doesn't then things become very unfair! And that is where censorship rears it's ugly head because it wants to control who gets a voice and who doesn't. I didn't and wouldn't spend much time listening to the Imus show because there are legitimately funny parts, but as a whole it doesn't have enough intellectual payoff to make it worth my personal time. Yet I'm not going to force the show off the air by firing the guy. That leaves me free to use my speech to fairly persua... I live in a country where there is no racist speech. I suppose it's difficult to imagine what life is like without it when one lives in a country so in need of its existence. There is much more to life than racist speech. Or I should say the US doesn't need racist speech. I know Egypt is not perfect so what do you mean? I do happen to believe 2 things. One is that according evolution theory race, at least potentially, is real and could lead to new species were there reproductive isolation and perhaps should unless one concludes that present human development is the ultimate possibility. Of course at present any such possibility will have to wait for space travel. And two, even if there were only one race, the same exact problems would exist that we now call racism only criteria other than skin color etc would be used. Egypt is far from perfect, however, race and skin color don't matter - the problem is social class. To say that someone is black or dark, or white is like looking in a box of crayons and describing the colors. Egypt is a multi-lingual, multi-hued society. This is what I know from study and experience; others may have a different view. It just seems like the US needs racism like a junkie needs a fix. I don't blame the citizenry, (myself included) for being saddled with this drug from the beginning. But at some point, every junkie needs to kick the habit or die. It's that simple. In the original draft of the Declaration of Independence, Thomas Jefferson castigated King George, called him an ... You know what. I have never read the entire Declaration of Independence or if I did, I recall really only the flowery beginning of it. I didn't find the Africans in the version I saw but I did find the "merciless Indian savage" unfortunately. I think you are trying to present things fairly and what you say about division by social class is I believe the general idea of what I think occurs. Put simply, the individual is always less powerful than the group and so individuals join and identify with a specific group for survival purposes. To be part of a group one needs ways to identify their group from all others and the simpler the identity logo, the faster one knows who to stand with in a fight. Thanks for your link. |
