The earth has been hit so many times in the past that we would probably look like the Moon if we didn't have large bodies of water hiding a lot of the impact sites.

I think it is very nice of meteors and meteorites to leave the evidence (elevated levels of the element iridium) of their deeds in the surrounding rock formations for us to find later.
