I thought it was tomorrow.

On 10 September, a first beam of protons will circulate in the LHC. The first moments in the life of the LHC will be an exciting time for the CERN staff, and will be captured by more than 250 media organizations from all over the world.

The first injection of the beam into the machine will be between 9:00 and 10:00 a. m.

Seriously thought, as I understand it, these reactions occur in our atmosphere regularly - this is simply an experiment to make them happen in a controlled way where we can measure their outcomes.
