Some 55 percent of Americans took a pro-life position on abortion. Of those, 33 percent said abortions should be "permitted only in cases such as rape, incest and to save the woman's life."
Ahh... Poll numbers, aren't they magical? Another way of spinning the same results: 22 percent believe that abortion should never be allowed, even if it means the mother will die. The other 78 percent believe that abortion is sometimes O.K.

Wow, you're pretty good at spin. I especially love the tactic of confusing the percentages of a subset to the overall population. It's too early in the morning for me to straighten that one out.

I wonder how many of the 55% have actually had an abortion. I'll bet some of them. Why is the abortion rate so high?

In Russia the abortion rate is astronomical compared to the US. I am not sure of the exact number, but it is over 50 %.

I don't think abortion is right. I wouldn't have one myself, unless I was told I would die giving birth. But to me, I don't think it's the government's job to make medical decisions for a patient either. Medical professionals should do that. Government should govern. Doctors should doctor.

I'm surprised by the right's stance on this issue, really. The right usually wants government to stay out of everyone's personal business. It's a contradiction.

Personally I think both the pro and the anti going to the extreme on this.

There needs to be some meeting in between the two.

Personally for people to use abortion as a form of birth control - that is just uncivilized and wrong. There are implants, b/c devices, surgery, etc. Use those methods or have the child and put up for adoption.

With that said - I will also add that I think a women who has been raped, would die in birth, or knows there will be some severe, un-treatable defect or disinformation to the child and decides she does not want to give birth - she should have that option.

It would be nice if willhelm would actually use data from a new poll when he posts a clip stating that data comes from a new poll. Actually his data comes from a Jan 2006 poll.

The newest poll I can find (ABC July 18-21, 2007) shows that US citizens when asked, "Do you think abortion should be legal in all cases, legal in most cases, illegal in most cases, or illegal in all cases?" produced the following results.

Legal in all cases: 23%
Legal in Most Cases: 34%
Illegal in Most Cases: 28%
Illegal in All Cases: 14%

Math -> 23% + 34% = 57% believe abortion should be legal in most cases. Link

The ABC poll is horribly flawed ,like most ABC polls. For example: What does "legal in most cases" mean. It has been shown that people being polled tend not to gravitate to extremes, especially when vague choices are supplied. This little slip-in category lets people off the hook in regards to making a firm stance in regard to abortion in a way that does not apply to illegal in most cases. Also, I did not see the demographics on this poll. ABC probably has the worst reputation of over-polling registered Democrats ( as much as 33 to 28). I wonder if that is why the demographics were not supplied.

Yes, my poll is outdated. I would not have clipped had I thought to investigate fu...

I'm sure it's a horrible poll if it doesn't support your position. You are more than willing to post a CBS poll although I always see CBS in the forefront of conservative attacks on supposed liberal media (they are all owned by conservative corporatists).

So let's use Gallup Poll which I find to lean conservative. Their May 10-13, 2007 poll shows that abortion should be sometimes legal is favored by 81% of respondents.

How about NBC with the Wall Street Journal (very conservative) poll, April 20-23, 2007. Abortion should be a decision left up to a woman and her doctor 55% agree.

Apparently, that's your view.

You should be more objective about polls. I see value in the ABC Poll. I just do not see the same value that you see.

I am objective about polls that is why I presented a variety of polls that show that average current polling results are about 55% in favor of keeping abortion as a decision between a woman and a doctor, unlike the one hand picked poll you presented.

Extremists on both the pro-choice and pro-life sides of this issue do not want for it to be settled once and for all - they are making political points and in some cases, cash, for keeping the controversy going.

The solution is clear. (To ME :LOL

We need a constitutional Human Life Amendment. It would legalize abortion before the eighth week of pregnancy, the point at which fetal brain waves have been detected (thereby settling stem-cell and in vitro issues as well) and would prohibit abortions after the 23rd week (a 24 week fetus is able to live outside his mother's body, with intensive care).

You don't want 7 week embryos to be aborted? Then don't abort any. You may FEEL it...

@willhelm - spin's my middle name, that's why I'm a Democrat, didn't you know?

Kidding aside ...

CrazyRedHead makes some excellent points. To me, one of the reasons why this issue is so thorny is because as much as people on both sides want to pretend it's a black-and-white, all-or-nothing situation, it isn't. You won't find very many Americans who think abortion should never be legal, even in the case where it is the only way to protect the mother's life. In other words, most Americans think abortion should be permitted in some circumstances. Similarly, as much as the pro-life camp doesn't want to believe this, the most vociferous and committed proponents of abortion rights still...

Thinking about this a little further, I realize I'm not being clear. My point is that there are so many factors that go into an individual decision to undergo an abortion that it's very hard to argue that a one-size-fits-all solution is going to work.

Here are a few examples.

Most people think abortion to save the life of the mother is OK. But how much risk to the mother justifies an abortion? What if the mother has a fifty-fifty chance of surviving? What if she has a five per cent chance? What if her survival is assured but she has a thirty per cent chance of suffering serious, long-term health consequences? How bad should the possible consequences be before they justify an abortion?

O...

I forgot to add in my original post -

Abortions would be protected by the Constitution before 8 weeks, and prohibited after 23 weeks - the middle weeks, 8-23, would be determined by the States. Blue states would likely allow all abortions in the 8 to 23 week range, while red states would have restrictions. You don't like the law in your state? Move to another state.
