For enlisted men, it comes down to this: "Ours is not to reason how or why; ours is just to do and die."

The prisoners wrongly interpreted this as an indication of his domination, when, in fact, he was running in fear, seeking to escape what I revealed to him Spirit to Spirit; that I was going to kill him.

I followed him out, chasing him down to subdue him and take away his hammer and smash his skull with it.

He ran into a building off the quadrangle, seeking sanctuary there.

When I entered the doorway, he threw the shiv and the hammer into a trash can. As I started toward him, he cried out to the "Hacks" (guards) to save him.

A guard stepped out from behind the one-way glass, looked at him, then me, trying to decipher what was going on.

I walked non-nonchalantly out the door to await a better opportunity.

I never saw that inmate again.

Therefore it is incumbent for a soldier to have consciousness and realize when fighting is right and wrong and not be a robot merely following an oath.
