tabsey says: The shrimp goes through it's life cycle ( from egg to layer of eggs) after the hollows on the rock fill with water from rain. Not so sure about the toiletry habits being the problem but numbers climbing the Rock increased dramatically in the sixties. Still no toilet at the top, as far as I know. Bits of the Rock are still being sent back by ailing people who have taken them illegally. For me this is an ethical question Tabsey. Tourism is a dollar spinner which humans depend upon. Yet, from my experience it does little to actually add to the goodness of the Earth (holistically). I have recently had a shift and have come to this understanding for "eco-tourism" to do what it says, it has to add to the well-being of the Earth, not take away. Currently, eco-tourism usually does not add, it tends to eat away at already diminishing forests etc. I've climbed to the top of Uluru, the climb is quite difficult, but once you get to the top, the view is truly magnificent, especially of the distant Olgas. It makes you feel like you are a part of nature, and as such, to want to see it preserved for all time. I took a party of school children up there, it seemed to effect them the same way. Around the base of the rock, you can feel the antiquity and the spirit of the place. To the Aboriginals, this part is the most sacred, and much of it is off limits to white people. They don't like us climbing to the top, but allow it, as there are benefits for the local tribe from tourism. A worked west of the Rock for a year and climbed it a few times ( even got roped in for the garbage run). I couldn't understand then why a better system was in place for protection of the Rock and surrounds. They have since acted on the surrounds and the climb is under increasing questioning. the only way to protect a place is if no one finds it. Know a few places as good as the Rock in their own ways, but no tourists are told of them. The ecology in Central Australia is very fragile and people do a lot of damage. Even the well meaning ones leave their mark. |
