Those were, in case you forgot, the "Dark Ages", where only Latin was read, leaving the people ignorant of the Bible in their own language.

We are well aware of the "federalists" position, who want a national religion, under pretense of "Christianity", that is actually an ecumenical Deism of the founders, whom, like Thomas Paine, renounced the scriptures as being inspired or historically reliable, instead of giving them their due reverence, and were not in fact true Christians at all.

There is a necessity of having true religion, but government cannot be trusted to establish or enforce it since its track record has proven to be the Persecutor of Christians while flying its banner. This is why Locke and others resisted government-sponsored religion, being protestant dissenters, and Machiavelli despised the Roman church as well.
