Socialism
= communism, Bolshevism, Fabianism, Leninism, Maoism, Marxism, collective ownership, collectivism, state ownership

=1. a theory or system of social organization that advocates the vesting of the ownership and control of the means of production and distribution, of capital, land, etc., in the community as a whole.
2. procedure or practice in accordance with this theory.
3. (in Marxist theory) the stage following capitalism in the transition of a society to communism, characterized by the imperfect implementation of collectivist principles.

Wrong. Socialism = Social freedom and community governing. Just because Americans have a screwed-up definition of socialism that is right out of McCarthyism doesn't mean that is what the global definition of it is.

Function:
noun
Date:
1837

1: any of various economic and political theories advocating collective or governmental ownership and administration of the means of production and distribution of goods
2 a: a system of society or group living in which there is no private property b: a system or condition of society in which the means of production are own...

If it was irrelevant, then it would not be part of definition...hence, it is relevant.
My thought...why does the third part of the definition constitute an explanation, when first 2 parts are acceptable...hummmmmm.

Do you actually know how to use a dictionary? Apparently not, because those definitions listed next to the numbers are alternate definitions, and are not necessarily relevant in every use of the word. The third definition is only there because of McCarthy back in the 1950's spreading lies and paranoia about socialism. It's not relevant to thinking people's definition of the word.

But I'm starting to wonder if you actually are a thinking person.
