Saw some pics of his "palace" in an email. Pure, money blowing opulence. Maybe it came with the job, but it makes a very dark contrast to the life being led by most.

Does the fact that no one has taken him out mean that they feel they are the same as him?

Its my guess that generally speaking most of the people there have been so traumatized that they are incapable of such action.

In 1998 I asked an Iraqi friend why someone didn't assassinated Saddam Hussein. His response was that there were many of equal evil or worse ready to take his place. My guess is that Mugabe is there to front for the military, which is really in control, but is hoping to escape the fire when the whole thing blows up by keeping the spotlight on him.

Good analysis, as usual, Masbury. My eyes were really opened when he went to Rome. He had to be absolutely certain as to his position to risk leaving the country in the midst of an 'election'. Mad or bad or both.

I disagree Masbury. I really think that this is (an all too typical) revolutionary turned despot. From the reports I have read he surrounds himself with yes-men (sound familiar? Bush) , does not want to hear about opposition or disagreement and casts blame on others rather than taking responsibility (again, familiar).
